@jusky:这里的 Take on the big inequities,应该是“与这个巨大的不平等较量”、“挑战这个巨大的不平等”之类的意思。take on 并不是 bear, sustain, endure 这类意思,作为“承担”常常用在 take on a new job, take on more responsibilities 等等。 Changing the World’s Inequalities(改变这个世界的不平等),是 Bill Gates 在哈佛毕业典礼上的演讲。

@lxdhk:我参考@dingdingdang 所提的三条意见修改如下: but now there are bugs in the foundation, bats in the belfry, and trolls in the basement:【但其基础漏洞丛生,钟楼聚集着蝙蝠,地下室里藏着怪物】=> 但是现在,其地基里生长着害虫,钟楼聚集着蝙蝠,地下室里隐藏着妖怪。 dissing the internet for rewiring our brains to give us the twitchy attention span of Donald Trump on Twitter:【诋毁互联网搞乱了我们的脑回路让我们神经兮兮地老去关注特朗普的推特】=> 诋毁互联网给我们的大脑重新布线,让我们像推特上的特朗普那样一惊一乍地注意力分散。 This has poisoned civil discourse:【这种情形毒害了民间话语】=> 这种情况毒害了文明的话语。 And the possibility of a more civil discourse:【以及带来更多民间话语的可能性】=> 并且可能带来一种更文明的话语。

If you take someone on, you fight them or compete against them, especially when they are bigger or more powerful than you are. http://www.iciba.com/take%20on

These are the very same cities where employers struggle to recruit and maintain skilled talent:【

好像漏了一个字“what”:"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to be informed." https://www.monticello.org/site/jefferson/if-we-are-guard-against-ignorance-spurious-quotation

These have been shaped over hundreds of millions of years:【在数百万年的时间里】数亿年或亿万年,hundreds of millions 不同于 millions。

Centuries before dinosaurs were even in a twinkle in our planet's eye — about 250 million years ago — the Permian-Triassic extinction wiped out nearly 90 percent of life:【我们这个行星目睹了恐龙出现前转瞬即逝的几个世纪——大约是2亿5千万年前——二叠纪-三叠纪灭绝事件摧毁了将近90%的生命】=> 在恐龙初次出现在我们这个行星之前的几个世纪……。

These days having a child at a good state boarding-school can be a sign of corruption:【近两年,如果自己孩子就读公立寄宿学校,会被贴上腐败的标签】=> 如今,孩子就读好的公立寄宿学校可能成为腐败的标记。

Yet given all of the capital’s urban maladies, the temptation to start with a clean slate is hard for planners to resist:【然而,就算首都的城市病千般不好,白纸绘蓝图从头另来的诱惑,有哪个城市规划师能抵挡?】=> 然而,首都既然有这些城市病,……?(Yet given ... 对比前一句 trying to make it work better might be more sensible. 不是 despite all of the capital's urban maladies.)

On the other hand, we knew that halfway through the alleged holidays we’d be hallucinating with fatigue, and three days with someone else looking after our lovely but exhausting little ones would feel like the kind of thing that should be available on the National Health Service:【可另一方面凯特和我心里有数,所谓的假期现在过到一半,我们夫妻俩已经被孩子搞得筋疲力尽,快得妄想症了,三天有人来帮我们看着这俩调皮捣蛋鬼,哎哟那感觉可比国民健康服务提供的福利还要爽噢】=> 可另一方面凯特和我心里有数,所谓的假期过到一半的时候我们夫妻俩就会被孩子累得迷迷糊糊,我们会感觉国民健康服务制度提供的福利应当包含有人帮我们看着这俩可爱的捣蛋鬼三天。 unexpectedly, after all that twisting and turning, at the front of the house, overlooking the drive:【不出所料,总是要这里拐那里转才走到我们的房间,在房子的前面,能看到下边的车道】=> 出乎意料的是,这么左拐右转的走到我们的房间,竟然是在房子的正前面,对着下边的车道。 I’d done this only once before, and set myself the target of hitting a single pheasant, which eventually, some way into the second hour, I did:【我定的目标对着单只打,一般最后到第二个时辰的某个时候我还真就打着一只】=> 我给自己定的目标是打下一只野鸡,这个目标终于在第二个时辰过了一会之后达成了。
